Transport from Littleborough:

To get back to Greenfield, either train to Manchester Victoria, walk/taxi to Piccadilly Station, and train to Greenfield from there, or train to Rochdale, tram to Oldham Mumps, then bus 84, 184 or 350 to Greenfield.

This 12 mile linear walk was undertaken by the Manchester Pedestrian Club 100 years ago, in May 1926, from Greenfield to Littleborough via Denshaw. In those days, communities were connected by walking, and 12 miles was considered average length! We celebrate the walk today.

This is the longest of three walks offered by the MPC. An interesting and varied linear walk, with canal and river paths, a bit of road, then tracks across moorland, including some steep and rocky, this is a walk for those who like walking 12 miles along some rough tracks and paths.

Route: From Greenfield station, along canal to Uppermill, to Dobcross, along River Tame via Delph to Denshaw. Maybe detouring via a minor road near Denshaw to avoid marshy areas. Up and over the watershed, down to Piethorn Reservoir, passing either east or west, to SD852133. Over or under M62 and thence to Littleborough either near Hollingworth Lake or across Clegg Moor. Route might be varied on the day, by consent of walkers. Pub and/or chips in Littleborough.

12 miles: 6-7 hours walk, moderate.

Please bring lunch plenty of water and good walking footwear and attire suitable to the weather.

This is the second of three walks offered by the Manchester Pedestrian Club in this Festival, and the middle-length, at 7.5 miles, flat. It takes the course of a newly opened path around the edge of Lindow Common, with a dozen points of interest about the area and the community that used to live there, including Quaker and other historic halls, recently discovered 16th century Puritan graveyard, traditional peat cutting, peat restoration project, and site of Lindow Man found preserved in the bog, etc.

For route details, see "https://www.discoverlindow.org/lindowloopwalk".

5636 Sat 16 May Todmorden: Orchan Rocks and Bridestones
as part of Manchester Festival of Walks
Stuart and Andrew Basden 4 m
10:30 am. Hare & Hounds car park, Burnley Road, Todmorden, OL14 8EA. Grid ref SD 930250.
Trains: From Manchester Victoria 09:21, 06:36 arriving 09:43, 10:07 am.

Please book onto this walk.

This is the third and shortest of three walks offered by the Manchester Pedestrian Club in this Festival. This 4 mile walk takes us up the side of the valley, around the interesting rock formation of Orchan Rocks, and across the heather to the legendary Bridestones - rich with local folk-lore - before heading back down to Todmorden. Great views.

Community: A century ago, workers and others in the community of Todmorden and other towns used to walk up to these rocks and similar places to escape the valley smog, up into the cleaner air of the moors, using paved paths paid for by local philamthropist. The Yorkshire-Lancashire border used to go through the middle of the town hall!
